Franklin Garden Club Earns Schoolyard Habitat Grants!

The Franklin Garden Club has very exciting news to share. This past fall, Mrs. Lizotte and Mrs. Paradis applied for two grants for the Garden Club and won BOTH of them! The first grant is from CT Audubon along with US Fish & Wildlife and Common Ground High School and is quite significant. The second grant is from the National Project Learning Tree Program. The club will be using these grants to install and Schoolyard Habitat and Outdoor Learning Classroom. The students in the garden club have been working hard to research plants native to Connecticut that will attract various pollinators and bird life to our garden. Please watch the front of the school in April and May to see the new learning area! Please also watch your children’s folders for more information and an invitation to come and help us with the garden on select Saturdays in April and May!

Garden Club News November 2016:  Please join us in congratulating our Garden Club, Mrs. Paradis, and Mrs. Lizotte for obtaining Schoolyard Habitat grant in which Franklin Elementary School will be joining a network of schoolyard habitats and urban oases being created across New Haven and Fairfield Counties in public spaces, neighborhoods, and schoolyards. These urban oases-habitats and green spaces for people and wildlife- create critical stopover habitat in urban areas for migrating songbirds and work to inspire people to conservation action and long-term stewardship of their communities.

On April 30th a few of the Franklin Garden Club members and their parents worked with Mrs. Lizotte and Mrs. Paradis plant two new butterfly gardens, several hydrangeas and other plants along the front of the school.

Be sure to take a look!

The Franklin Garden Club received a grant from Connecticut Forest and Parks Association and The National Wildlife Foundation to plant a pollinator garden this spring. So watch around the building for some beautiful plants being planted.

In other good news, the Garden club has grown to 30 students joining us!   We meet twice a month for the rest of the school year.  Please contact Mrs. Paradis (email: [email protected]) or Mrs. Lizotte (email: [email protected]) for more information.
